Investigating factors affecting technical and industrial education in Mashhad during the Qajar and Pahlavi periods

Abstract

With the rise of modern industries, there was a crucial need for specialized technical manpower that could only be met through proper training and education. This led to a focus on industrial high schools and technical and vocational institutions to equip individuals with the necessary scientific and practical skills. In Mashhad, special attention was given to technical and industrial education in line with the city’s industrial development. Industrial high schools and vocational schools were established in collaboration with Germans and Americans. However, the journey was not without its challenges and successes. Despite the importance of these educational institutions, there has been limited research on their formation and development and the factors influencing them. To address this gap, this research aims to explore various aspects of technical and industrial manpower training and analyze the internal and external factors that have shaped these institutions. The study utilizes a descriptive-analytical method based on documents, publications, and library studies. The findings of the research indicate that steps were taken towards technical education in the late Qajar period, with initiatives such as the establishment of the Nakhrisi Khosravi Joint Stock Company and technical courses offered by the Mashhad Electricity Company. The collaboration with Germans led to the founding of the Mashhad Industrial High School, further supported by Americans through the Truman Act. In the late Pahlavi era, West Germans continued to contribute to technical education in Mashhad, resulting in the establishment of the Mashhad Institute of Technology.
