Fars Province is one of the key centers of handicrafts in Iran, especially in the production of nomadic handwoven textiles, where Qashqai women have played a significant role. This study explores the role of Qashqai women in the carpet weaving industry of Fars from the Pahlavi era to 2011. It aims to analyze the historical trajectory of their participation and the effects of political, economic, and social changes on their activities. Two main questions guide this research: (1) How has the role of women in the carpet weaving industry of Fars evolved over time? (2) What impacts have political, economic, and social developments had on Qashqai women's participation in this industry? The hypothesis suggests that these developments—particularly after the Pahlavi period—have led to a decline in women's role and weakened their involvement in carpet weaving. The study is based on documentary and library sources, along with interviews with experts and practitioners in the field. Findings indicate that several factors, such as changes in nomadic lifestyles, rural-to-urban migration, higher education among nomadic girls, a decline in weaving skills among younger generations, economic hardship, low pay, and reduced carpet exports, have contributed to the decreased participation of Qashqai women. With the contraction of carpet weaving activities and shrinking market demand in Fars, women’s presence in the industry has declined. If this trend continues, the traditional art of Qashqai nomadic carpet weaving may face the risk of extinction in the coming decades.
